View Full Version : Noticing loss of short wispy hair on pillow

I've been losing hair for a couple of years now starting during my teens and I think I've pretty come to terms with it. I was really scared to find out whether or not it was androgenetic alopecia because the idea that I can't really do anything to "cure" it scared me, but it's been a long time and I'm tired of moping about it. What I want to ask is.. if the short wispy hairs I find on my pillow are a definite sign of androgenetic alopecia?
I do notice that some of my regrowth is the same in thickness, however for the shorter regrowth it is a tad bit thinner, which I don't know for sure whether this is because the ends of my hairs are thin (most of the normal thickness ones that I did not cut are).
Thank you for your time :)

Hi Digress,
I think the only way to really tell if you have AA is to have a scalp biopsy performed. And even then, I think it can sometimes be hard to tell. But ask your dermatologist.
There is also something called the Hair DX test that supposedly can tell you whether or not you are prone to AA. I don't have the link on me right now, but if you type it into Google, their site should come up.

Hi Little Star,
Thanks for your response :) I'm not sure I'll be able to see a dermatologist anytime soon because the last time I booked an appointment, I needed to book it a couple of months in advance. The first time I went to a dermatologist recommended by my family doctor, he diagnosed me with AA.. what he did was pull my hair, however I had washed my hair that morning and didn't realize I should not have prior the appointment. I've actually read a bit on scalp biopsies, and to be honest it sounds... quite painful XD
I've never heard about the Hair DX test, but it looks really promising.. I just hope it is available in Canada, haha :)
Thanks for the advice :D

You're welcome! Yes, scalp biopsies are quite painful, according to both my dermatologists. And, as I mentioned, it can be difficult to tell hair loss disorders apart, even under the microscope.
I am not sure how accurate the Hair DX test is, but hopefully it can help you. I believe on the Hair DX site you can look up where the closest facility is that does the test.
Good luck and let me know how it goes! :>

The HairDX test will help predict your hair loss BEFORE you can see any visible hair loss.

Thanks for all your responses. I underwent some treatment because of hair loss and luckily it was cured by several sessions of hair treatment for months. Good to know that there is a forum which is willing to educate people on this matter.

Is it normal to have in people with healthy hair hairs with variable thickness?
