Hi everyone!
I'm new here but I've been lurking the site for quite a while...I'm 18 years old and my hair starting thinning after I got on the birth control pill...since then I've been doing a few things to increase the thickness of my hair and I've had success.
First I'd like to start by giving a piece of advice. Many women, after noticing hair loss from the pill, decide to get off it - this is a bad idea. Getting off the pill will again reset the telogen cycle, and therefore I have decided to stay on the pill until I can at least partly fix the effects of my first episode of TE (telogen efflevium).
My hair loss hasn't been in particular spots on my scalp, just an overall thinning. However I've noticed my hair is most thin on the sides of my scalp. I'd also like to note that I bleach my hair platinum blonde, doing the roots every month and a half or so.
I can honestly say that I've managed to stop excess hair loss by doing the following things:
Taking biotin - I have been taking 5000mcg of biotin daily, yes its a lot. You must take it faithfully but it does produce results.
Saw palmetto - I know many say it can't be used in conjunction with the birth control pill but I decided to take it anyway. I think it's worth a try by anyone. I don't get any side effects from it.
EGG MASKS - I read that treating the hair and scalp with a mask of eggs and olive oil can help to prevent hair loss, and it has done not only that but has also made my hair feel so much thicker, softer, and healthier. Recommended for anyone with dull, lifeless hair. What I do is mix 1 raw egg yolk with about a tablespoon of cold-pressed olive oil in a small bowl, then I put it on my scalp and my whole hair, leaving it on for hours at a time. I do this as often as possible - since it's the summer, I've been doing it every day. LET ME SAY THIS - YES IT WILL FEEL GROSS - eggs don't go on the hair smoothly and the mixture will harden on your head and smell kind of bad - I shampoo it out with like 3 Nioxin shampoos in the shower but it honestly makes my hair feel so much thicker! Sleeping with olive oil on the scalp is also good if you have a dry scalp.
Nioxin - it won't regrow my hair, but I've been using it for like 6 months and I know it does increase blood circulation on your scalp which prevents hair loss. Plus, my scalp feels great after using it even after I bleach my hair, not itchy at all. Somehow, it makes my hair feel heavier, and that makes me feel better.
Letting the hair air dry - practice this because although blow drying doesn't cause hair loss, the scalp is in much better condition if you let your hair towel dry or air dry. To make my hair fluffier and thicker looking, I actually brush it with a round brush, not a metal one but one like this : http://www.thecosmeticmarket.com/images/P/fekLargeRoundBrushL.jpg
I also have STICK-STRAIGHT, very fine hair - so for those of you with natural wave to your hair you are lucky, because the hair automatically looks thicker wavy.
A couple tips:
- Don't try and count the hair that's falling out and DON'T STRESS OVER ALL HAIR FALL BECAUSE YOUR SUPPOSED TO SHED HAIR EVERY DAY. Stopping excess hair loss does not mean no hair will fall out - I don't freak out when I see my hair in my round brush because it's supposed to be there. I've seen the brushes of my thick-haired girlfriends and they are FULL of clumps of hair.
- Trim your hair - it makes it look thicker- a more blunt hairstyle, like one with no layers, will make your hair look a lot thicker. Don't flat iron your hair because that makes it look thinner and flatter.
- Remember - brushing or combing hair doesn't cause hair loss, though I recommend combing over brushing. The hair that falls out when your brush or comb your hair would have fallen out soon anyway. I made the mistake once of hardly ever detangling my hair because I hated seeing the hair fall out, but that will only leave you having to rip your hair out when detangling huge knots.
- When tying up your hair, use a scrunchie and don't make the ponytail too tight. Scrunchies won't rip your hair out like elastics do.
