View Full Version : Sad about hairloss

Hair loss started for me when I was about 42. I guess that is when my hormones started to change. It was very upsetting, to say the least. I tried many different hair growth products but none of them worked.
I try to just accept that my hair is getting thinner and thinner. Sometimes I am successful. Sometimes I get very sad.
Part of me wants to just shave my head and wear wigs. Be done with it.
Has anyone heard of any new products? Thanks . Athenai:rolleyes:

Hi!
I can relate I am 40 and the hormones are changing. My doctor told me that everyone in their 30s and 40's goes through a molt and that my hair will come back?? :( So please tell me what products have tried that have not worked because I agree with you in not just sitting here while our precious locks disappear! There seems to be alot of snake oil salesmen out there on the internet!

Replying to Sammy: I have tried Avacor and several others, which I cannot remember the names of. The only thing that worked for a little while was Rogaine. It dries out your scalp though and after six or eight months, somehow my hair didn't respond anymore. I would wait a while, watching my hair get thinner again, and then restart. I did this for several years. Recently I used it again, and I actually passed out when I had to get up in the middle of the night. This was quite scary to me. However, it does say on the bottle that if you feel dizzy, etc. one should stop using the product. So now I can no longer use the product.
To be quite honest. I have tried many products and if they don't have as one of the ingredients Rogaine in them, they don't work. I have given up. Please read up on the description of Rogaine and the warning.
I did hear from someone yesterday though, who said that there is a new product out called Revitalash. Google revitalash.com. eye lash growth and they also have a product for hair. It is very pricey though, and it does not claim to grow hair, just to make it appear more full and healthy looking. I don't really see how that is going to help my problem. The hair product is $180. So I am thinking this over really well before I make any kind of decision. Athenai

Hi Athenai!
So the only thing that worked for you was Rogaine? Did you try all the pills that they talk about on this site? I watched the Rogaine video and it showed the hair growing and falling out (I think twice) before it stays. Could this be your case??
Revitalash is listed as well in the story that I am sending you as well (Under the second link-more.com) . I am shocked by the prices  I think I might try Folligen. http://www.folligen.com Read this story (about a woman over 40 who's hair started thining) and see what you think?

Hi Sammy: I checked out the site you provided and thank you. I have heard of Folligen but have never used it. It sounds like it is a good product for damaged hair, etc. It does not mention hair loss, per se. Further down on the article, it mentions the use of Minoxidil (Rogaine, same thing), together with Folligen. That tells me that Folligen alone will not cause hair to grow back, because only minoxidil can do that.
As I mentioned in a previous post, I have used minoxidil several times. It does grow hair and is helpful, except (1) it is ok for a while and then no longer works, hair falls out, etc. Then you can start the whole process again after giving it a rest of a few months. It also dries your scalp. On top of that, if you have somewhat low blood pressure, it can make you get dizzy and pass out, which is what happened to me not too long ago. That is why I can no longer use it. It was originally one of the ingredients in a high blood pressure drug and people noticed that they grew some hair. It has a warning label on it though regarding dizziness or rapid heart beats--to stop it when this occurs.
In my experience, there are no "natural" products that grow hair. Some of these products are good for hair, maybe slow down loss of hair, but that seems to be it. All these products make certain claims and I have tried a lot of them. Pricey too. One of those that worked for a while was Avacor. I used it several years ago. Its main ingredient, again, is minoxidil. They also sell vitamins along with it that one takes daily. Saw palmetto is the main ingredient there. However, after using it for 9 months or so, it no longer worked, and my hair fell out again---like with the plain minoxidil. If you want to try it though, why spend all the money on Avacor when the ingredient minoxidil is really what makes the hair grow. You can buy minoxidil by itself much cheaper. Also, you can go to the health food store and get some saw palmetto and biotin.
I have tried Saw palmetto by itself and also Biotin, but this does not cause hair to grow. Again, this was disappointing.
Now, Revitalash hair product might be good for the hair. It sounds like a good product and my friend swears that the eye lash product really works for her and that her lashes are getting fuller. Revitalash does not claim hair regrowth though. If it did make your hair regrow, it would be worth $180, but there is no such product. It supposedly makes the hair seem fuller. There are quite a few products which claim that. Anyone who really comes up with a product that regrows lost hair for real, is going to be a trillionaire!
My mother had thinning hair when she approached menopause, so I think this is the same verdict for me.
It is hard to accept though. Sometimes I just want to shave my head and stop looking at my hair every day and stop counting what falls out. Then just wear wigs and be done with it. Those are the feelings I have sometimes.
Finally, I want to share with you yet another thing: I recently ran into a friend who is a therapist. She uses the Attractor Field Technique (look up Tree of Life on the internet). Anyway, it is kind of complicated to explain, except that it is to do with tapping the meridians, kind of like Acupuncture. In addition, there are CDs for every conceivable mental and physical condition. You play the appropriate CD and the sounds supposedly resonate with certain meridians and heal whatever condition one has. Anyway, the reason why I mention this is because it listed a CD for "Women's Complaints" and one of the tracks was for thinning hair. I thought about it for a while, then purchased it---$150 (not cheap). You always hope that this time it will work. I have played it now for almost two months (every day during the day) and there is no change at all. One should see little hairs growing by now. I see nothing. So there is another claim that, at least so far, is not working. I am very disappointed about that.
Anyway, enough for today. Hope this is helpful. Athenai

If anyone is reading in the forum tonight please help me with some information. I have just started taking Aldactone .25 just starting and I have taken it a long time ago with no problem BUT my legs are killing me. It feels like someone has beat them with a hammer. Wondering if anyone has had this before and will it pass. Also was put on Nu-Iron 150 and that seemed strong for my stomach... Also today after only three days of taking the stuff my hairloss was much worse than before and that was bad enough!!!!!I am really getting a bad attitude.. Any help would be appreciated...Thank You, Lisah

Sorry I have not been put on any drugs yet to comment on that symptom.:(
Ahthena- Did you see any results with the Saw palametto/Biotin?
My moms hair started thinning at 40 and so did my female doctors. Both of them have thick hair now so I can't figure this one out. My doctor said hers started 5 years ago and then stopped. I can't quite figure out how you are suppose to get your hair back from the dead. My hair is just awful! I started a healthy hair regiment a month ago (vitamins. Sulfate free shampoo etc.) but I look worse than when I started....
My doctor has me doubling up with iron pills (Plalfer) twice a day to see if that helps! I was low in iron when I went to my doctor a week ago.

Thanks for replying... I guess I'm going to keep trying the Aldactone. The Nu-iron pill seems to be o.k. I'm hoping that will bring my iron levels up to a good level. I'm still learning how to use this forum.... so if I don't respond correctly someone please let me know... I will keep you updated.. Another question?? Anyone used the Thymuskin products?? I heard they were really good!!! Thanks, Lisah

Sammy, I had no improvement with Saw Palmetto or Biotin which my naturopath gave me. Anyway, still looking. Lisah mentioned something interesting about Thymuskin. I will check that out and see what the ingredients are. If it doesn't have minoxidil in it, I might try it. Athenai

Lisa and Sammy: I just checked this product out on the internet. It sounds really good. It does not seem to contain minoxidil, which is what I am really concerned about because it is a drug that can affect your blood pressure and heart rythms.
Anyway, there are all sorts of testimonials. I read those with a grain of salt simply because I have tried so many products that were supposed to be wonderful, etc. and did not work.
The cost for a two months supply is around $120. They do claim that it regrows hair, among other good things.
However, there is no guarantee. A lot of products will have a guarantee that if it doesn't work for you, you can return it within three or six months. ThymuSkin does not have this policy. That makes me a little skeptical. I have to give it some consideration and will think about it for a few days.
However, it does sound like a good product. I wonder whether anyone here on the board has used it. Thanks. Athenai

Hey girls, just wanted to let you know that I was going to order the Thymuskin and they wanted to send a sample that would last about a week (at no charge) before I order to make sure that I'm happy with it!! Lets keep our fingers crossed and I will let you know......If you hear anything let me know!!!!! Lisah

Yes let me know how it goes...:)
It is so sad that some of these things can be so expensive. I mean if they work we have to take them for the rest of our lives!
I also read on the Internet that we only absorb 10% of the multivitamins that we take because everything is so compacted... interesting!

Lisah, thanks for reporting re Thymoskin. I didn't know that one could get a sample. Let us know what you think about the product. I might ask for a sample myself. Thanks. Athenai

Lisah, how did you obtain a sample of Thymuskin? I communicated with the Thymuskin website and they said "no". Did you go through another channel? Thanks. Athenai

Hello, when I called to order the shampoo the man ask me exactly which one I needed?? I told him I was not sure...I ask him about the statistics for the product and he told me they had rather send a sample and then I would know which one to order... The number is for a place in North Georgia that ships these products.. The number is 800-214--8631.. I talked with another girl who lives in Utah who has posted on the forum many times and she said it was a great product but that she could not afford to use it much anymore... of course she has grown almost all her hair back and that makes a big difference!!! Her issue was with the B/C I think that is how her problem started... So maybe this will at least be good for stopping hairloss anyway... I would take that right now versus this continual shedding that I deal with on a daily basis...Good Luck To Us ALL!!!!!

I'm not sad anymore- but I was... Big Time... it consumed me until I decided to take the hard step of walking into the wig store... now, I can't wait to put it on in the morning and GO!

Feelingwiggy: thanks for your post. I think that is the best option for me also, at this point in my life. Otherwise, it is a constant battle of hopes and disappointments. Wigs are fine. Also saw something about a Turkish scarf on this forum which looked pretty nice. Wigs are not good in the summer, but certainly in the winter time. There are options and it really comes down to the choice we have as to how we want to view this problem. It takes some time to get over it though. Thanks Athenai
