Hi, my story is a bit involved and complicated, so please bare with me :).

I recently turned 40 years old with a wonderful, thick head of hair (my hair dresser would always comment about how beautiful it was). 3 months ago while I was vacationing in Greece I noticed my hair to start to shed and needless to say it's just gotten worse until now. I've lost about 30% volume and it just comes off in the shower (which I dread now!), and throughout the day. I see my hair lying on everything in the house!

So, I'm still not exactly sure what happened to cause it but my hair dresser was using an amonia based blonding cream that was applied directly to my scalp for about a year (so about 4 or 5 times). It was so painful when he applied it I would cry and not be able to breathe (yes I'm stupid for letting him continue it!). In addition, I did have some inital reaction to the blonding cream. I developed a very noticeable itchy, flaky dermatitis around my hair line. My doc have me a topical steroid cream and it disappeared within a few days so I thought no prob. My hair hadn't started to fall at this point. Right before I went to Greece I told my hair dresser that we were going to DC it but he talked me into using it "just one more time"! One week later in Greece it startd to fall and fall and well you know the rest....

This is where I am today: I developed a bacterial pneumonia (mycoplasma when I got back from Greece and a few other minor infections) and was on antibiotics for a month. I had gotten it last year with a sinus infection and has to take a month or so of antibiotics. This type of pneumonia requires longer term therapy. Anyway, so it's obvious I've been under a lot of physical as well of emotional stress for a while (I live far away from home etc).

Anyway, I've had all my tests done and I'm "normal" and they keep saying they I've had a shock from the chemical hair dye and stress and to take vitamins etc. Also my dermatologist said I had some yeast on my scalp that I had to clear up with Nizoral. My scalp was burning and itching throughout all of this and I even developed hives on my legs last week and had to take antihistiines.

Anyway, they're at a loss and say that it should clear up and grow back but it's falling -- mature and immature hairs rapidly. Over 200 a day! And it's not stopping.

Now what's worse is that I've been on Regaine 2% for 3 days and it's falling worse. I think I might discontinue it and see if it stops falling on it's own in the next month with exercise, now that I've gotten over the pneumonia.

What do you guys think? And if you've read this last statement; thanks for getting through this long post!

Hi!

Yes I can relate... I am 40 as well and I got my hair touched up 2 weeks ago. I told the hair dresser that I was having "shedding issues" since early July and to be gentle. Needles to say I had an ice pack on my head for 3 days and I seem to be shedding even more now. My advice to you is to not get your hair processed. I hope your hair recovers. I also had thick hair 3 months ago and now I don't recognize myself. People at work think I have had it thinned out! I don't feel comfortable telling them the awful truth!

thanks for the support guys! yeah, i don't know what to do? i think that i'll stop the rogaine (i only used it 5 times but my hair fell out like mad!) and see if it recovers on its own for a while.

but i'm in tears all the time now. i had -- will have again! -- such lovely hair and its my best feature. at this point noone can really tell but i can! the burning and constant itchiness seems to be alleviating -- it could have been from the scalp yeast infection (which other docs says is debatable) that's cleared up along with the chemical reaction to the hair solution and all the antibiotics i was on...

at this point noone is sure and i've spent a TON of money and time going to docs and researching but there's not much i can do is there except go on rogaine and i'm very sensitive to meds so if anyone gets side effects it'll be me :(.

my husband keeps telling me not to talk about it and that he'll love me no matter what but its getting to me. i think about my hair from the moment i wake up until i sleep and then i wake up with hair anxiety dreams. no fun.

what are you guys doing for your problems?

i've researched and only come up with the following (possible) treatments...anybody use any of them with success or not?:

palafer prenatal vitamin (iron supplements for ferratin levels -- mines at 79)
rogain
llf (laser light therapy)
saw palmettos (natural vitamin & dht inhibitor) sundown
super biotin 600mg
fish oil
propecia (only men)
folligen hair cream
tricomin spray
rogain foam
emu oil
nizoral shampoo (which i've used for the scalp yeast but hasn't stopped any hair loss)

....looking over the list, it seems pretty sad. there doesn't seem much i can do at this point :(

thanks for any advice.

I am only into to this hair treatment thing for almost 2 and a half months but I use...

Palafer iron supplements (I hav low iron) I don't use the prenatal one.
Fish oil
Nizoral shampoo* Tried this but got a bad reaction on my scalp
I use a multivitamin every day as well...

The only problem is if you use too many things you can't tell if you are having a reaction to any one of them and unfortunately it takes 4 to 8 months to see results! I would say though that with the fish oil has made my scalp is less itchy.....

Hope this helps?

I'm sorry about your problem! I've never experienced scalp pain or itch but I've still lost a lot of hair! I don't know what to recommend but just wanted to tell you that you have my support! Welcome, this site has been tremendously helpful for me :). Good luck!

Ive been on palafer for 3 yrs, my iron was at 86 and then 2 weeks later it was at 84. Growing up my mom would say my hair was as thick as a horses mane (it was easily a a min of 2-3 inches thick in a pony tale) before I was diagnosed as anemic my hair was falling out all over the place and my once thick hair was cut down by 2/3's (not to mention the other symptoms of the anemia)...3 yrs later Ive had 1 relapse where my hair was falling out for no reason and the drs couldn't figure it out (it only lasted about 4-6 weeks) but my hair is back to where it was before it started falling out - thick, thick, thick!!! (but I will admit I do get it thinned out b/c its just too hot esp in the summer and I dont need my hair taking shape again as a triangle lol)
Your iron levels are quite low and it takes a while for the stores to go back to where they should be (they should be a min of 112) so it will take a while for your hair to grow back also.
Just have patience, I know its hard and you've probably have been told that 50 million times but its true there is a light at then end of the tunnel
