Hello everyone,
I have just seen another GP and she offered to let me try Finasteride. She contacted the dematologist at the hospital on my behalf. I saw this dermatologist before and they know my "situation". I know this medication is usually for men who suffer from hairloss but it's the last thing that I could try.
I have been on Cyproterone Acetate and that helped a bit. Finasteride is the same as propecia.
I was just wondering if there are any ladies who have tried Finasteride and have had some success with it.
I suffer from alopecia androgenetica and telogen effluvium. I started taking saw palmetto 3 months ago.
I would appreciate any thoughts on Finasteride.
Thank you.

I would love to hear from anyone as my GP told me to think about it and do some research and get back to her.
I would be grateful to receive any information about Finasteride for women with androgenetic alopecia.
thank you

Dear Giselle,
As far as I have read the anti-androgens finasteride and dutasteride are prescribed only to women who are not in child bearing age or are not planning to have children. Pregnant women should avoid even touching the pills containing those anti-androgens because they can lead to feminization of a male fetus. Therefore such treatments for women who are not post menopausal should go together with a birth control pill. Also as far as I understood finasteride is cleared from your system in several days of stopping the medication but dutasteride is still not researched enough and it might stay in your system for months which is very dangerous if a woman wants to get pregnant eventually. Because I am 29 and I want to get pregnant in the next several years I prefer to keep my system clean of any anti-androgens. Therefore I have not tried any yet so I cannot speak from my experience.
What I can suggest to you is to read some academic research where you can find some important information based on scientific trials with women with AGA.
Dr. Sara from the network suggested two important publications - “Hair Loss in Women" by Jerry Shapiro, M.D. published in New England Journal of Medicine in 2007 and "Medical Treatments for male and female pattern hair loss" by Nicole E. Rogers, MD, and Marc R. Avram, MD published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology in Oct 2008. Also the article by Francisco M. Camacho-Martínez called “Hair Loss in Women” ( published in Seminars in Cutaneous Medicine and Surgery 2009) has recent information on cyproterone acetate (CA), spironolactone, drospirenone, flutamide, finasteride and dutasteride.
