I am a new member. My name is Lish, I'm 31. My hair has been thinning for a few years now. It didn't bother me much at first, my mom and aunt both have thin fine hair and I figured as I aged I would thin out also. In addition to the hereidtary component, I also have panic disorder for which I take an SSRI, and a beta blocker for anxiety-induced heart palpitations. The past 6 months my hair loss has really begun to bother me, and it all came to a head a few weeks ago. My boyfriend and his brother had come home from a night of drinking. His brother, unaware that I was in the room, began saying a lot of nasty things about my hair. How much I've lost, I looked ill, awful, etc. It nearly broke my heart. You always comfort yourself about your flaws with the old notion that you're always your worst enemy, and things never look as bad to others as they do to yourself, but now knowing others really do notice and how bad it looks it has upset me to a whole new level. Anyhow, I have really enjoyed reading thru posts here. It's great to know I'm not alone and maybe I can start to feel better about this someday.
A few things to mention about my beginning battle~
Nioxin, does nothing.
Megatek, just began.
Next steps, doctors appointment and possibly Toppiks?

Hi Lishmay, go to this website I just came across it a few minutes ago when I was doing a search for easing heart palpitations, they drive me nuts, anyway do the Thyroid Self Test ok, and read over the website I think it will be of great help to you, I did the test and scored 91, out of control I have so many of the symptoms it is unreal and it all catches up with you, slowly but surely you get worse and worse it seems to take a couple of years before it catches up with you. I have just started on some iodine drops and vitamin D3, my hair has also been falling out for a long time and my hairdresser has been saying what is wrong with your hair, it is not growing back and getting thinner and thinner month by month she has been shaking her head. I have a lot of the other symptoms of Thyroid problems and my blood tests proved I had low Iodine levels. You maybe in the same boat. Anyway hope this helps you out. The specialist that I am seeing for the Iodine drops said it would take about 3 months before I would see any improvement and new hair, so have to be patient.
Best wish
Angelique

Heart palps are the worst aren't they? I've had my thyroid checked a few years ago but my doctor is sending me again on Thursday. I scored 105 on that test, although I know a lot of those symptoms are/can be side effects from my meds. Thanks for the info, I wish you all the best with the iodine, keep me posted!

How did you find out to take iodine drops? How much do you take? I have heard a lot of mixed information on it when it comes to hypothyroidism. I am wondering if that may be right for me..

Maybe you can read my thread and help me? http://forum.womenshairlossproject.com/showthread.php?t=990

I never started the iodine, not yet anyways. I saw a derm who was unhelpful at best, just told me to start Rogaine. I didn't. I had an appointment with an endocrinologist a few days ago and he told me to see a derm. The level of frustration is off the charts. My last thyroid was 2.9, I don't think I got any other levels pertaining to thyroid checked, but I'm waiting on all the blood work this last doc did for me. Although it is in the normal range, I seem to have almost all symptoms of thyroid trouble, so it must be in my head~ JulieAnn- because your tests clearly show an issue I think seeing a natural dr is a good idea, perhaps the iodine would be beneficial without the scary sounding side effects of the thyroid drugs.
