Hi, I'm sorry, I don't have a recommendation, but I'm hoping someone knows a good hair-loss specialist on Long Island, in NY. I already know about Dr Redmond (in NYC) and Dr Ted Daly in Garden City. If you have any other names, I'd love to know. Thank you.

Hey Victoria - I haven't heard of Dr. Ted Daly, is he known for treating women's hair loss? Did you ever see him or Dr. Redmond?

Yes, Dr Daly is a hair-loss specialist, I saw him in October 2007. He sent me for a ton of bloodwork, and except for low iron, found nothing wrong. He did two biopsies. When I came back for the results (3rd visit) I was only allowed to see a nurse, who said I had AGA. She gave me prescriptions for clobex and something else (I can't remember, but it was an awful foam), told me use Rogaine and take lysine, biotin, a muktivitamin and tums (for calcium). She cut a chunk of my hair while removing the stitches. I had questions she could not answer, and told me if I wanted to see the doctor again, I'd need to make another appt. He did not accept my insurance, I did not make another appt. To me, it was like "take 2 aspirin and call me in the morning". I personally was not happy there.

OMG, I'm so sorry for experience you had with this doctor. I think that story is similar to what many women experience when they see doctors for their hair loss. It seems it simply isn't taken seriously and the doctor (men and women) are very callus to the whole thing. You know because it isn't life threatening or anything. I sort of beg to differ on that. How many times have you been driving in your car and glanced at your hair loss in the rearview mirror? I've done it more times than I'd like to admit, I'd say that's pretty darn dangerous eh? :p I never did that before my hair loss, I always kept my eyes on the road at all times. I smack myself each time I do it.

Oh, I am so guilty of that too! Just this morning I did it. And then I was checking my eyebrows - they've gotten sooo patchy - It's pretty humid here so I was trying to make sure my bangs hadn't curled up and that my eyebrows were sort of covered (not as easy as it used to be since my bangs are thinner too!):(
Plus the stress it causes is very bad for us (don't you love the doctors who tell you not to stress about it? Oh, OK, sure!).
And I hope you had a nice day yesterday:)

First the doctors tell you the cause of your hair loss is STRESS, then they tell you not to stress out about your hair loss. AHH HA HA HA LOL :confused: -- says the 50 year old male doctor with a full head of hair.

The only other "hair loss expert" I have heard of online is Dr. Redmond. Has anyone here been to him? I dont think I can handle a trip all the way into the city because I have been ill, but if he is absolutely amazing or something, I would consider it.
Any other hair loss experts on Long Island besides Dr. Daly? I wish I could find a list online somewhere of dermatologist that specialize in hair loss.. Does any such list exist? :confused:

Vicki-- I know you had your thyroid levels checked, but i cant remember if you had your thyroid antibodies checked to rule out hashimotos. I know the eyebrow hair loss is indicative of hashimotos thyroiditis (Sorry if I already talked about this with you.. my memory is so bad now. Just wanted to mention it just in case I hadnt) *HUGS*

Hi Elissa, I don't know if the thyroid antibodies were checked, but I'll put that on my list too. Thank you for mentioning it.
As for Dr Redmond, there seem to be quite a few women on the network who've seen him...I think you can do a search of blogs by putting his name in.
And I really hope you feel better!!! xxx

Yes- I have been seeing Dr Redmond for over a year now- after a bunch of horrible experiences with other doctors. I to did the trip sick and yes it is worth it- he is amazing. Also- if you are feeling up to it and can splurge, Dov at Dov Salon in NYC is amazing. He specializes in hair loss and is the most compassionate person I ever met.

Hi Kathy, thank you for the recommendation for Dov salon. I'm going to look now to see if he has a website...
My dermatologist mentioned Dr. Jerry Shapiro in NYC as a hair specialist I could possibly consult. I called. He is very expensive (no insurance accepted, consultation about $825 with a deposit on a credit card of $400 when appointment is made). In light of this, I was wondering if anyone here has had experience with him? (I am 68, experiencing all-over hair thinning, all tests normal.) Thanks.

Hi Thea, that's not a name that was ever recommended to me(I live in Queens). It was familiar, though...I found a blog mentioning him over on the network. The consensus seems to be "not impressed". That was from a couple of members who saw him, and reviews they read online about him.
I hope this is some help!
forthe response. Not very encouraging. I will ask the dermatologist if she has any one else she could recommend.

I'll be seeing my regular derm in 2 weeks, not for hair reasons (he flat out told me he's not too familar with female hair loss). I will definitely ask him again if he can recommend anyone else, and I'll post it here if he gives me a name.
Thanks. There really is so little information on specialists who are really helpful in women's hair loss.

OMG...I am so sorry with your experience but my experience has been quite to the contrary. I saw three other "hair loss doctors" who all told me I was getting older, use rogaine, take vitamins, etc. As my hair loss got worse I saw Dr. Ted Daly in Garden City (Long Island) who I had read very good things about. He really examined me and told me right away I had a type of scarring hair loss. I used antibiotics and got injections and the hair loss stopped. I wasted over 2 years with useless treatments and had further loss with the other doctors. I was happy someone really LOOKED at the problem. I wasted alot of effort before I saw Dr. Daly.:):D
