Hi all! I'm 19 years old and began losing hair last year, specifically in May. My hair got very greasy and began to fall out in handfulls, and a derm. finally recognized that I had some sort of fungal infection, supposedly related to sebum overproduction. I treated it with anti-dandruff and Loprox shampoo and, after about 4 weeks, the shedding decreased in late July. I continued the regimen for the rest of the year and experienced minimal shedding. However, this April the shedding returned! I've had everything checked out (hormones, thyroid, etc.) and it's all normal; everybody says it's a fungus but doesn't know what type. I assume it's not sebborheic dermatitis because that's supposed to get worse in the winter and mine is almost certainly triggered by heat (I live in Houston, though we do keep the house air-conditioned, and as a result it's pretty dry).

Does anybody have any suggestions as to what type of fungus might be aggravated by a hot, humid climate? Is it a seasonal thing? If it's preventable, I want to avoid whatever climate/factors make it worse. I feel like this should be a simple diagnosis.. but it's proving not to be. I'm desperate to find out what this thing is so I can use all available resources to nip it in the bud!

Thanks guys!

I've had tinea versicolor (which is a fungus related to yeast) on my upper chest before and that is definitely triggered by heat and humidity. It also goes away when dandruff shampoo or ketoconazole is used. I would bet this might be similar to what you are getting on your scalp as tinea versicolor is very common. http://www.aad.org/public/publications/pamphlets/common_tinea.html
