I have a few questions about hair loss, if anyone is able to answer them.

Is AGA the same as genetic hair loss or FPB?

If not, will minoxidol help with genetic hair loss?

Is it advisable to use minoxidol if you don't suffer from AGA and have TE?

I ask because I have been losing my hair over the past few years and it has become very thin, mostly on top. The part has widened and you can see my scalp. It is thinning all over however and becoming gray very quickly. The strands are becoming thin as well. I went to a derm last spring and he ran the usual blood tests and suspected TE upon first glance. He told me to use 5% rogaine in the meantime because it makes hair grow in faster. I have been using 5% but once a day because it really irritates my scalp and makes my face puffy. I have notice some new small hairs popping up in the front and I have noticed some gray hairs growing in dark again, but my hair is still very thin and you can still see my scalp. I've been using it for about 2 months straight now. If it is TE that I have, if I stop using rogaine, will it make my hair fall out?

I recently returned for my follow up and he said my blood work is normal and I don't have the increased hormones that are associated with AGA. He just looked at the top of my head and said it looks like I had some hair growing back and left. I really feel like he was just brushing me off. I can't even make another appointment with him with having to set it up through my family doctor again and it took almost a year to get in last time.

I appreciate you taking the time to read this and answer any questions if you are able :)

Is your derm a hair loss specialist? I have been to two derms and a GP who have no clue really, so I did an internet search and found a GP who specializes in hair loss in my city. I have an appointment with him in a couple weeks.

I decided that really hair loss is complicated in women and requires full history and workup. These derms don't have the time to do this kind of thing so finding a doc who is interested in these issues might be key.

I will report back my experience in a few weeks.

    Good luck

    Hi Sarah,

No, he wasn't a specialist in hair loss. I live on an island and we are limited to doctors/specialists, hence why it took me so long to get into see him in the first place. I've resorted now to doing my own research and trying to treat this myself. I'm worried that he said I don't have AGA and I do, because my hair is really thin on top now and the minoxidol is causing sores and intense itching, I also get swelling from it, but I was told to continue with it if I wanted to see my hair grow back. I am seeing some, but very little.

Good luck with your appointment and keep me posted!

Hi - are you using the foam 5% Rogaine? They have recently started selling a 5% foam formulation for women, you can get it off of Amazon. I've been using it at night, once a day and haven't had any problems. It's supposed to have a lower incidence of side effects.

Hi again - really recommend the following website with tons of information about different types of hair loss. It's run by a fantastic MD who gives real answers and is not just trying to sell products or BS us with fairy tales about how he can "fix" hair loss.

Hair loss can have multiple reasons. I’d suggest you to fix an appointment with a qualified hair specialist and not some dermatologist. From my personal experience, I can say that hair essential supplements like those from Quality Nature etc. can be very helpful in slowing or even preventing hair loss. My sister was facing the same issue and now she swears by Quality Nature’s Hair Growth Essentials. All the best!

There are some important things you need to do is drinking at least 2 - 3 liters of water and eat plenty of raw vegetables and fruits. You can keep hair healthier , cleaner and softer with argan life shampoo and apply it three times a week. The product made difference on my hair.
